A Local Runner’s Favorite Running Routes in Kanazawa

If you love running, Kanazawa is one of the most enjoyable cities to explore on foot. Kanazawa is not too big, not too crowded, and not too rural, just the right size for runners.

How Running Changed My Life

I love running. I’ve been running for more than 20 years. Except during the snowy season, I run 5–6 km almost every day. Exercise clears my mind and makes me stronger.

I started running for a simple reason. I wanted to change my lifestyle, my health habits, and my mental well-being. About 20 years ago, I was overwhelmed with work, household chores, and taking care of my three kids. I got tired easily. I often had slight headaches, and I couldn’t sleep well at night. I knew I needed to make a change, and I believed exercise would help.

When I first started, I couldn’t even run 100 meters. I had to stop because of side pain. But little by little, my body got used to it. Eventually, I was able to run 3 km regularly. Then I set new goals for myself, a 5K race the next year, a 10K the year after that, then a half marathon, and finally a full marathon. Now, I run a full marathon every year, and I truly enjoy it. 42 km is a long distance, but it’s absolutely worth it.

So today, let me show you my favorite running courses in Kanazawa.

Best Running Routes in Kanazawa

Along the Sai River

There are two main rivers in Kanazawa, and the Sai River is one of them. The running course along the Sai River is probably the most popular route among local runners. You will definitely see many people running and walking here.

In spring, you can enjoy running under long rows of cherry blossom trees, which makes this route especially beautiful. The area is also close to the Nagamachi Samurai District, the Nishi Chaya District, and the Teramachi area, so you can combine running with sightseeing.

You can adjust the distance from around 3 to 10 km, so it works for both beginners and more serious runners.

Along the Asano River

The Asano River is another favorite among runners in Kanazawa. In spring, the cherry blossoms along the river are simply stunning, and you’ll often see Kanazawa University students having picnics and enjoying the blossoms nearby.

If you run along this route, you will pass through the Kazuemachi Chaya District, which is right next to the famous Higashi Chaya District. You can also discover quieter, less touristy spots along the way, which makes this course feel more local and relaxed.

You can adjust the distance from around 3 to 10 km, so it works for both beginners and more serious runners.

Kanazawa Castle Area

Scenic running route around Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa Japan

One of the most convenient routes is around Kanazawa Castle. The castle is surrounded by a street called “Ohori-dori”. This street used to be a moat during the Edo Period, built to protect the castle from enemies.

Today, this area offers a pleasant running course where you can enjoy views of the castle and historical surroundings. The loop is about 2.1 km, with some gentle ups and downs, making it a great option for a short and enjoyable run. Suitable for beginners to serious runners.

I showed three courses here. You can combine two or even all three routes. Or I can take you to any other interesting sightseeing spots. Don’t worry. All roads lead to Kanazawa Castle.

Join the Kanazawa Marathon

The Kanazawa Marathon is held on the last Sunday of October every year. Registration begins in June, and there are 15,000 spots available. The fee is 14,000 JYN. Every year, more than 30,000 people apply, so getting a spot feels like winning a lottery. The Kanazawa Marathon is considered one of the best races in Japan, partly because of its unique food stations. You can enjoy a variety of Kanazawa specialties, including local sweets, sushi, and even curry rice! Many people line the streets to cheer for runners, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere. I’m sure you would love this marathon.
