What Makes Kenrokuen a Perfect Garden

When I was younger, Kenrokuen Garden didn’t interest me much. I visited it only once a year during cherry blossom season. No entry fee is required during that season, and that was the only time I went to Kenrokuen Garden. To be honest, when I was young, it just felt like a quiet garden with a lot of trees. I was not mature enough to understand the value of the garden.

When I decided to become a tour guide, I started to learn about the garden, which was a bit boring in the beginning. But as I learned more, I discovered many interesting facts about it. Gradually, I became fascinated by its beauty and history.

Difference Between Western Gardens and Japanese Gardens

First, let me explain the difference between Western gardens and Japanese gardens.

Western gardens are often very symmetrical and well-structured. Everything is carefully designed. You can see straight lines, geometrical shapes, and beautiful flower beds that show the beauty of human design.

Japanese gardens are different. They are made by human hands, but arranged to look like real nature. You will see stones, moss, trees, and ponds. Everything is designed to look natural, as if it has always been there. That’s the beauty of Japanese gardens.

A great example is Kenrokuen. Walking through the garden feels like walking in nature. It’s not about which style is better or worse. What’s really interesting is how each culture sees nature differently.

Western gardens show the beauty of order and design. Japanese gardens show the beauty of harmony with nature.

Find the Six Qualities of Kenrokuen

The name Ken-roku-en actually means a garden that combines six special qualities. “Roku” means six in Japanese. According to an old Chinese poet, it is very difficult for one garden to have all six features. If it does, it is considered the perfect garden.

These six features can be grouped into three pairs.

Spaciousness vs Seclusion
Normally, if a garden feels open and big, it doesn’t feel quiet or secluded. But Kenrokuen gives you both at the same time.

Man-made beauty vs Old natural beauty
Usually, if you design too much, it looks artificial. If you leave it natural, you lose the design. But in Kenrokuen, man-made art and natural age exist together in harmony.

Water features vs Panoramas
Normally, water features are found in lower areas, while panoramas need higher spots. So it’s hard to have both in one place. But in Kenrokuen you can enjoy them together.

That’s why Kenrokuen is considered one of the most perfect gardens in Japan.

So as you walk through the garden, try to find these six features with your own eyes. It’s like a treasure hunt.

And remember, there is no single “right answer.” Each person notices different things, and that is the fun part. You get to find your own Kenrokuen!
